JOHNNY DIGWEED. (SAMPLE)

“What in the name of Jesus fucking Christ are you doing here Digweed,” cried Brother Mark?

Cecil just stared in utter disbelief; he couldn’t take many more surprises and as a result felt his chest tighten.

Four of the Matakarians stepped forward and formed a protective shield around Cecil, that immediately provoked an instant reaction from Brother Wilberforce, Reginald and of course Carruthers and Brad Kent and all five were now pointing various assorted weapons in the direction of Cecil and his five Matakarian protectors.

It was then Rifu took charge, “I take it you are trying to stop the boy from reaching the top gentlemen and performing whatever unspeakable act it is he is trying to do?”

This threw everyone off guard for a second but the bizarre spectacle of a bunch of cowled monks all squaring up to each other and half of them brandishing weapons, well it was a wonder the whole of the East Berlin Police force hadn’t turned up.

Rifu carried on in a soothing voice, trying his best to convince Carruthers, who Rifu perceived to be the leader of these men that they were all on the same side and that if they didn’t get to the top and quickly, it wouldn’t matter a jot what happened after anyway.

Eventually and putting away their weapons, Carruthers, Kent, along with Brother’s Mark, Wilberforce and Reginald formed a brand new alliance with the Matakarians and grudgingly Cecil.

Brother Mark though kept a wary eye on Cecil, at the end of the day, Cecil Digweed was STILL that boys father and how in the bleeding hell had he managed to get from out of that police station and to this place in such a short space of time?

Indeed that same thought had crossed Charles Carruthers mind and would be giving the local plod in Jersey a strict talking to after all this bother had finished, if only though Charles Cuthbert Carruthers had known what was about to happen?

As soon as all eleven of this newly formed alliance entered the main elevator, a little boy with ash blond hair and piercing blue eyes appeared from around the corner.

Smiling and standing there with both hands planted in shorts pockets he watched the lift ascend to the top of the tower.. After mentally counting numbers in his head, little Johnny’s fire blue eyes flashed into life and he began to sing.

Inside the Fernsehturm elevator there came a strange grinding sound, various lights flashed on and off and then suddenly the lift ground to a halt.

“WHAT NOW,” shouted a concerned Brother Reginald, there were a few murmurs from the others as well as looks of extreme consternation, then suddenly and without warning the elevator, with a sickening motion began to plummet to the ground below.

A myriad of bodies were flung onto the floor of the elevator as it hurtled to the ground below and it would only be seconds until the lift crashed to the bottom in a bone shattering metal rending nightmare killing everyone inside!!

JOHNNY DIGWEED (SAMPLE)

JANUARY 1969

EAST BERLIN

Yuri Ivanov pressed his nose against a window on the sixth floor of the East German Secret Police headquarters and stared out at the rain soaked Alexander Platz, “Ivanov are you listening to me?”

Yuri momentarily closed his eyes and sighing said, “but of course sir, every word.”

Out of the corner of his eye a large red face wearing an equally large hat appeared and in return said, “really, would you care to repeat my last sentence then comrade?”

For a split second Yuri wanted to inform General Gorski that he was going to shoot him in the mouth, reason? He talked too fucking much. Indeed in the last hour, Gorski had hardly paused for breath and it was starting to really irritate Yuri.

Normally he only dealt with Colonel Yukov, however the afore mentioned was recovering in a Moscow state hospital after recovering from a suspected stroke, no wonder thought Yuri given the way Yukov was always screaming profanity and insults, the man seemed to be in a perpetual state of seething rage.

“Well,”snorted Gorski, “I’m waiting,”

Yuri suddenly turned around and stared directly into Gorski’s eyes. This took the general aback a little and also found it rather disconcerting, indeed Gorski didn’t much care for this mercenary and really didn’t understand why a gun toting peasant from Georgia had been allowed to get involved in such a delicate matter?

Yuri began to speak. “sir, like I said before, according to information from a trusted source in London, all indications are that Krupp and her followers are here in Berlin, along with that little boy.

General Gorski closed his eyes and raised a forefinger, an enraged Yuri fell silent, countless permutations of how he could get away with making the murder of this man look accidental whirring through his head.

“Not another word Ivanov.” Gorski’s eyes flickered open, pausing for a few more moments again which Yuri found to be almost intolerable then said. “Find Krupp and this boy, when you do, eliminate them, no more excuses, the KGB has an infallible reputation to protect, one that you would be wise to remember, you have 48 hours, after that.” At this point Gorski smiled an evil smile and said, “I’m afraid I will have no other alternative but replace you with, shall we say, errr, a more competent operative.”

Anyone looking at Yuri’s knuckles would have seen they were bone white, however given the fact they were firmly ensconced in his trouser pockets, didn’t of course give away Yuri’s abject fury.

Seconds after controlling his unbridled rage Yuri smiled himself an evil smile which was equally just as disconcerting as Gorski’s, bowing his head slightly, though not subserviently Yuri spoke.

 “48 hours?”

“You heard,” replied Gorski.

“With any means at my disposal,” asked Yuri?

“Whatever it takes, but I warn you Ivanov, there are to be no traces of this back to the KGB which would embarrass the Soviet government in Moscow, do I make myself clear Georgian?”

That comment right there was enough to cement General Gorski’s future and as soon as Yuri had finished the job in hand he would take great pleasure in eradicating this pompous borscht eating asshole off the face of the planet. In fact Yuri had already decided that this was to be his last ever official assignment for the KGB, he was, like all good assassins going self employed after this particular jaunt.

Yuri nodded curtly and clicked his heels together Prussian style knowing this would infuriate Gorski, turning swiftly around the murderous assassin departed the Stasi headquarters and headed off across Alexander Platz toward checkpoint Charlie and the west.

A tour bus pulled up just 20 yards away from checkpoint Charlie in the American sector.

After all 20 tourists had alighted and checked their cameras were primed and ready, the female tour guide began the usual spiel.

“As you can see ladies and gentlemen we have arrived at the Berlin wall, the wall itself stretches 45km across and is 7 meters high, started in August 1961 and believe it or not as only a thin white painted line initiated by an East German border guard called private Hagen Koch. Shortly after that, large concrete blocks were strategically placed followed by barbed wire.

Six months later a larger more substantial barrier was set up which was continually fortified until what you now see before you today.”

Five camera toting monks edged a little closer to take in the incredible spectacle in front of them.

Indeed none of the intrepid five had ever been this close to the infamous Berlin wall before, even Kent or Carruthers who were actually trained spies in the employ of both the CIA and MI5 respectively.

“WOW, uttered Brother Wilberforce, now that’s a wall.”

“is it supposed to keep all those people in,” queried Brother Reginald?
“Not really, technically speaking it was designed to keep us western bourgeoisie out, though having said that,” Carruthers shrugging his shoulders and in a sighing motion said. “According to official West German figures, up 89 people have lost their lives trying to escape, there hasn’t been any recorded incidents of anyone trying to gain entry from the western side.”

At that point Brother Mark clapped all his fellow monks across the shoulders and staring directly at Carruthers said, “Right then Einstein, so how do you propose we get across?”
